North East England is well connected by rail and road with the rest of the UK, and takes only 3 hours from London or 2 hours from Edinburgh by train to reach this beautiful area of Britain. You can walk the 2000 year old Hadrian`s Wall which is a 73 mile long World Heritage Site, with 25 Roman forts and museums. Vindolanda, one of the forts, has archaeological digs in the summer months. There are more castles in the North East of England than anywhere else in the UK. Bamburgh has fine displays of armour and magnificent views of the coast, and Dunstanburgh sits between two cliffs. Both are set against a wild coastal backdrop, while Warkworth castle is further inland and an impressive motte and bailey fortress. Alnwick castle is also recognised by many as Hogwarts from Harry Potter films. Lindisfarne Priory is situated on Holy Island and was home to St Cuthbert and St Aidan.
Within Durham, you can visit Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral, both World Heritage Sites. The beautiful cathedral was founded in 1093 and St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede were buried here. It is one of the best examples of Norman architecture in the world. You can take a Bishop River cruiser through the city of Durham and enjoy the sites. Alternatively you may wish to take a boat trip to sea and do a spot of whale, seal and puffin spotting. Durham offers a wide range of shops as well as a Victorian market. In July and August you can enjoy some street entertainment in the cobbled Market Place. Throughout spring and summer Durham centre is awash with prize winning floral displays. The famous racecourse is right next to the River Wear, and in June the annual Durham Regatta takes place on the river.
